Today the III Congress of Gerontologists and Geriatricians of Russiastarted at the "Novosibirsk Expocentre". During the three days of the Congress the professionals will consider the priorities of modern gerontology, aging, quality of life and health care for older people. On the third floor of the International Exhibition Center an exhibition of medical equipment and medicines for senior citizens will take place. Also during the congress, young scientists from across the country will introduce new developments in the field of gerontology as part of their work for different competitions. On October 26, experts will get acquainted with gerontological services and Veterans hospitals of Novosibirsk and the Novosibirsk region.
The Health and Social Forum was opened by the Deputy Governor of the Novosibirsk region, Mr Kyrill Kolonchin:
“Holding this significant event in the Novosibirsk region is a recognition of the region as one of the largest medical centers in Russia. It pleases us to see the broad representation at the forum of our senior scientists and health practitioners. I believe that if government officials, scientists and the general population understand the role of aging people in life development, economic and social problems will be solved creating a society that will rationally use the spiritual, physical and intellectual resources of the different age groups.
The program "Active Aging with a high quality of life in Russia" was introduced by experts on the first day of the Congress. As was noted at the meeting, the Novosibirsk region may be one of the test sites for the implementation of this program. The project involves the development of a set of activities that contribute to the formation of health conducts and habits at state, public and personal level. More than 180 billion roubles could be made available from budgets of all levels. One of its main objectives is to create gerontological services structures as separated entities in the country, providing them with a legal frame.
“Our goal is to dignify an old age person with the ability to work,” said the director of the Research Institute of Gerontology, Vladimir Shabalin. ” Of the 30 million retirees existing in Russia today, only 1.5 million are in need of assistance, 50% are of working age and only 8 million are involved in child care. To create favorable economical conditions can attract many more older people back to work. Most of them are well educated, experienced and willing to work. Motivating active aging should be the main philosophy in our society, and to do this we need to improve the health care of our elders and prepare professional geriatricians.
